What No One Tells You About Clarity (And Why You Keep Missing It)
Crystal clear
Here we go again with another buzzword:
Clarity.
It seems like that's all you're supposed to get and then somehow you'll ‘magically’ turn things around in your life and business.
More freedom.
More money.
More clients.
And all this from getting clarity?
Wow. Who knew?
Clarity can feel like the wind. You know it exists. You see evidence of what having it can do. But it can feel elusive as if it blows to and fro and stays just out of reach.
Let's address that today and talk about the truths no one mentions.
We'll look at what clarity isn't. And then dive into what it actually is.
Then you'll see that clarity is within your reach. But not in the way that you think 😉.
1. Clarity is not a thing
So many things to see!
Right now wherever you are, I want you to look around.
What are 3 things you see in the room?
As I write this, I can see a fan, bottled water and a guitar.
If I wanted to, I could go to the store and buy a fan, bottled water and a guitar. I could pick them up off the shelf, head to the cashier, buy them and leave.
That's because these items are objects. Things that I can perceive with my senses.
The problem we have is that we transfer this type of thinking to everything in life.
Including clarity.
That's why it feels out of reach. Because even though it's a noun (sorry, English specialist over here), it's not concrete.
You can't see, hear, smell, taste or touch it.
It's abstract.
And abstract things are hard to hold. Hard to pinpoint.
You can draw a picture of my fan, bottled water and guitar. The things you identified around you? You can see them. So there's a picture for them.
Ask 100 people to draw those objects and you'll get similar looking images.
Now ask them to draw clarity.
Good luck getting a uniform set of pictures.
In order for you to find clarity, you need to stop thinking about it as this thing you acquire like a fan, water or a guitar.
It's not a thing.
It's a process.
So let's look at what it actually is. I'll give you two analogies and a Bible story for reference.
But first, the analogies.
2. Clarity is a puzzle
Is this the spot?
Think back to how you fix a puzzle.
You take the pieces out. Turn them over to see the patterns.
Identify the ones that will form the frame. Make the frame and then start on the inside pieces.
Usually, you look for the section that seems easiest to fix.
You keep looking back at the box to make sure you're on the right track.
You think a piece will fit because it looks right. But then you try it and realise it's close but not correct.
And you notice certain pieces will never fit so you don't bother to try them at all.
And you repeat parts of this process until the puzzle is finished.
Clarity is a lot like that.
You have a picture of what you should be aiming towards. In real life, that picture is God's Word. That's the blueprint you're trying to match the pieces of your life to.
You go through a whole process of figuring out what works and what doesn't.
Sometimes it's obvious. At other times it's too close to call.
So you try something and if it doesn't work you try something else.
A puzzle is a thing but in order to see it's true beauty you have to go through a process.
God has given you the pieces. Just like with a puzzle, you start with the ones you know for sure.
The edges. The obvious patterns. And then you make your way through the unknown sections bit by bit.
Clarity isn't a thing. It's a puzzle.
You wouldn't expect to take a completed puzzle out of the box. Don't expect clarity to come complete in one go either.
3. Clarity is a journey
On this journey
Unless you do a ‘’Scotty, beam me up,” you'll need to take a journey to get where you're going.
When you go to the store, work, church. Anywhere.
You start at one point. Then you take a walk, ride or drive to move forward. You don't just arrive.
Unless Scotty does his thing 😄.
Clarity is a journey. Now get ready for this…
You will spend your whole life going through seasons of having clarity and not having it.
Just like being on a journey.
Sometimes you'll know where you're going as you'll drive comfortably on a familiar road. And other times you'll end up on a road that's not familiar and you'll have to pay close attention to the road signs or GPS
Clarity isn't a thing. It's a journey.
With things like Instacart though, I can see why this concept is hard for some people. No shame or judgment over here. Just an observation.
You can stay home and order stuff and it gets to you with ease.
But clarity doesn't work that way.
We have a saying in Barbados 🇧🇧: “If crab don't walk ‘bout he can't get fat.”
Which means that if you don't leave home you won't get anywhere or do anything.
Clarity comes in the doing. You get it as you go on the journey.
So if you're sitting and waiting for it to come, you'll be waiting a long time. But don’t take my word for it. Let’s use God’s Word and see what He says.
4. What does God's Word say?
God’s Word
In Acts 8:26-40 we read the story of Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch.
Here's how it begins:
Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch,
Let's stay here for a bit.
God sent a message to Philip through the angel. He got one instruction.
Go south to the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.
That's it.
Nothing about what He will do, who he will meet. Nada.
Then the next verse says, “So he started out…”
If this isn't the picture of being vague and unclear I don't know what is.
There was no clarity when Philip decided to go. He went based on the knowledge that if God sends him, he doesn't need to have all the info.
He just needs to trust The One who has all the info and knows the end from the beginning.
In verse 29, the Bible says that “The Spirit told Philip, ‘“Go to that chariot and stay near it.”’
Again there's no further instruction. Nothing about what to do when he got there or who he would see.
But immediately, Philip ran to the chariot and found a man reading Isaiah the prophet.
It was The Ethiopian Eunuch. Philip taught him about Jesus Christ and he got baptised in a body of water they passed along the road.
Philip got clarity as he went. He had enough puzzle pieces to start him off and God gave him the other pieces with time.
He started the journey with little info but got clarity as he walked the path God sent him on.
Clarity seems out of reach when you think of it as a thing and not a process.
Clarity seems out of reach if you think you need to have all the pieces and the full map before stepping out.
Clarity seems out of reach if you seek it outside of God's voice and being obedient to His will.

Anything.
You'll only get clarity when you build your faith, trust God when He instructs you and walk in obedience at every step.
That's how clarity comes within reach.
And it will continue to be a journey until the day you die.
